Yahoo! Mail goes to infinity and beyond

As Yahoo! Mail approaches its 10-year anniversary, I’m the lucky one who gets to announce that we will begin offering everyone unlimited email storage starting in May 2007. To mark the occasion, I checked in with David Nakayama, our group vice president of engineering, for some perspective on this milestone. In case that name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the developer of RocketMail, one of the world’s first webmail products, which Yahoo! acquired and relaunched as Yahoo! Mail in 1997.
Dave reminisced: “I remember getting in a room to plan our RocketMail launch over a decade ago and worrying that our original plan of a 2MB quota wasn’t enough, and that we needed to be radical and DOUBLE the storage to 4MB per account! It’s ironic that I routinely send and receive individual mail attachments bigger than that now. Our total capacity for mail accounts back then was 200GB for all of our customers. At Yahoo!, we’re now receiving more inbound mail than that every 10 minutes.”
When Yahoo! Mail launched 10 years ago, users got a whopping 4MB of storage for their entire mailbox. Today, you would fill that up with a single picture from your weekend.
This got me thinking about how the storage capacity of other popular technology products has changed. A quick snapshot:
1997: Yahoo! Mail launches with 4MB of storage
- SanDisk introduces 2MB flash card for the Canon PowerShot.
- Compaq announces “high capacity memory upgrades” in four capacities, including 16MB, 32MB, 64MB and 128MB capacities.
- Caleb introduces the Ultra High Density floppy disk drive that stores up to 144MB on a single disk.
- The first iPod is still a gleam in someone’s eye. It’s not introduced until 2001 and comes with 5GB of storage.
2004/2005: Yahoo! Mail upgrades in 2004 to 100MB of storage, followed by a jump to 1GB in 2005
- Olympus upgrades to 1GB flash memory card.
- HP announces 160GB storage upgrade for its Media Center PCs.
- Corsair in 2005 announces a USB flash drive with 4GB of storage.
- Apple announces the Fifth Generation iPod with 30GB capacity.
2007: Yahoo! Mail announces unlimited email storage
- SanDisk launches 8GB flash card for photo storage.
- Alienware introduces a desktop computer with 1 terabyte of storage.
- Apple currently ships the newest 80GB iPod, launched in 2006 and holds up to 100 hours of video.
We’re psyched to be breaking new ground in the digital storage frontier by giving our users the freedom to never worry about deleting old messages again. And, like any responsible webmail service, we have anti-abuse limits in place to protect our users. BTW: As much as we’d like to just flip a switch and “unlimit” everyone on the same day, we’ll be rolling this out over a few months to facilitate a smooth transition — we know there’s virtually nothing more precious than your inbox.
We hope we’re setting a precedent for the future. Someday, can you imagine a hard drive that you can never fill? Never having to empty your photo card on your camera to get space back? Enough storage to fit the world’s music, and then some, on your iPod? Sounds like a future without limits.
Beats a slice of birthday cake, eh?

Congrats on the big birthday - I love Yahoo mail since day 1.
Just a question (which I also posted on my site, click my name) — if I have a process which emails me a file every night (10mb), will this be acceptable to store within the Yahoo mail system?
Might help for you to clarify the yes/no on major topics so not to cause any tension later on.
Again - way to go and let’s have a cake anyway. I want the Y piece!

Hi!
Congratulations on this move. Finally a reason to return to yahoo.
Yahoo has recently started taking steps that makes it a viable platform even for developers. However Yahoo can really entice developers by taking some very simple steps. e.g. Authentication. BBAuth is a good first step. However it would be nice if it can be used by non web based products and there is no registration of the endpoint url. Kind of similar to Googles Authentication mechanism.
Thanks

First of all Congrats and thanks! This is exactly what customers have been asking for, and it’s what you delivered. It would be nice to launch a public beta of your IM client you’ve demo’ed when you turn ten too! Happy Bday!

Yahoo! Mail User | March 27th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
Dear Yahoo!:
I’ve been a loyal Yahoo! Mail user for nearly 10 years. I’d like to thank you for giving us unlimited storage for mail, but what’s the point of doing this when you do not offer us disposable email addresses (you call this “Spam Guard/AddressGuard”)?! Are you giving us more room to collect spam?
Yahoo! Mail is, in my opinion, the best. It’s reliable (I’ve never seen a message like “Oops! The sevice is temporary unavailable, etc…” This message looks familiar if you’ve used Gmail.) and the interface is absolutely user friendly and easy to use.
Hence, I have more than one Yahoo! Mail email address. One to collect newsletters, one to apply to jobs, and one for bank statements. If you gave me disposable email addresses, I would probably have just ONE Yahoo! account!!!
(On a side note: I’ve noticed that you offer disposable email addresses, mail forwarding, and POP access to people with domains other than the “@yahoo.com” domain. But this offering of “free” services is inconsistent. If I sign-up for @yahoo.fr account, I get disposable email addresses, POP, and mail forwarding, but if I sign-up for a @yahoo.ca domain, I receive similar services except for disposable email addresses.)
So, what’s my point?!???????
You want to keep your existing users, correct? You don’t want to lose us to Windows Live Mail and Gmail, right?
There’s no point in giving us unlimited storage if you don’t give us disposable email addresses. I despise spam and will continue to have multiple Yahoo! email addresses in order to avoid them. Please just give all of us disposable email addresses so that I won’t have to have multiple email accounts. Also, please give all of us free POP/IMAP if it’s possible to do so. =O)
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Thanks.

Happy birthday to everybody on the Mail Team!
InvestorBlogger | March 27th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
Just make sure that when you do the upgrade you don’t have to roll back the accounts, like Yahoo! did on the old http://photos.yahoo.com website.
We were encouraged to upload our photos, then to save money, the service was seriously curtailed by cutting out large images, resizing images, and so on. I guess Yahoo! lost a lot of customers over that.
I have never trusted any photographs to Yahoo! since that time.

I have been a Yahoo Mail Plus customer for a while (before it was offered for free), and a yahoo email user for a very long time. This is great - congratulatons on ten years. This move easily vaults Yahoo Mail ahead of any other email service out there.
One thing that would be great to see would be IMAP access - do you have any plans to introduce this feature?
Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Fantastic. Now, could we address the load time of the Mail beta? From clicking on the mail icon to inbox, it’s 13 seconds. Is it that slow due to being an AT&T/Yahoo DSL user? Is it faster for a straight Yahoo Mail user?
Manas | March 27th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

When will you fix your spam problem? I am still getting far too much spam compared to my gmail account.
davidwr | March 27th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Promising infinite storage could bite you in the legal rear end later.
I would’ve gone with some number that you could live with if all your users using 90% of their quota used 90% of the new quota. As it is, you’ll have a few people emailing themselves thousands of huge files just to see if you mean what you say.

I will transfer all of my yahoo mail content to gmail if I find a way. No matter what yahoo does, it has lost to Google in every department. I’m using my yahoo accounts rarely anyway.
omglol | March 27th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
It could be argued that Yahoo! only increased storage capacity from 4Mb to combat Gmail’s industry-shaking 1 Gb of storage.
Joe Beaulaurier | March 27th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Sweet. Thanks for doing this. Yahoo! Mail has a lot of accounts to roll this out too. It’s a huge investment in time and energy just to roll it out.
For those earlier comments complaining of the lack of disposable addresses or spam in their Yahoo! account, for a mere pittance ($20 I think) each year, a Yahoo! Mail Plus account pays off in spades. http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/
Otherwise, you’re getting a free ride, how can you bitch?

Interestingly, this comes about a month after Rediffmail announced unlimited storage. Will Hotmail, and GMail follow? I guess!

i still remember,
it was 2 mb in india when i joined.
suddenly it became 4 mb, and i was so happy.
then i saw it rise to 25 mb, which was enough for me.
after that it grew to 100 mb, then 250 mb.
and then it became 1gb. and it still is.
now this unlimited one, is making me really very very happy!
congrats yahoo, from http://www.harmu.com team! cheers!
Srobinou | March 27th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
I’ve never been able to fill up my inbox yet. So I don’t really care about this increase… But it could happen and then I would be very happy to have an illimited place where to store it ;)

Bilal Hameed | March 28th, 2007 at 1:04 am
Keep it up guys.. How about making the email client a little bit faster. The prime reason i left yahoo mail and switched to Gmail was that Gmail was faster…
I hope to see speed enhancements rolling out soon.
Ankur Banerjee | March 28th, 2007 at 1:06 am
Wow, now this absolutely beats everything out of Gmail’s ‘Infinity + 1′ plans. I mean, I’ve always loved Yahoo! Mail so much, that even though I’ve Gmail and Windows Live Mail accounts, I never really use them because Yahoo! Mail is so much more feature rich and reliable than those two.
freebird | March 28th, 2007 at 1:30 am
Good. Hope Yahoo! will come up with a good UI also. If we consider reliability and ability to send attachments, yahoo is far better than any other service.
Wishing Yahoo! all the luck.
Jany Simocko | March 28th, 2007 at 1:32 am
I like Yahoo Mail, but I really miss POP3 in free version. And I know it is the main reason why people convert to Gmail. I am thinking about Gmail too, I really kňlike Yahoo Mail, but…

Hello,
Great. I am a Yahoo Mail Plus user for long long time.
Of course I look also what Yahoo’s competition is doing
and one great thing to add is an integration of a Photo Manager
and Yahoo Photo. Like Google’s Picasa (I must admit I love that app)
Looking forward what Yahoo will bring next,
Bas.

Will u please upgrade your anti spam system? We require it very badly. Thank you..!
WiseGuy | March 28th, 2007 at 3:50 am
I wonder if Yahoo’s trying this publicity stunt because of thier incompetence to effectively filter all the spam that gets through
:)
Abdul Aziz | March 28th, 2007 at 4:02 am
This is simply great news. But I would prefer all Yahoo! properties showing consistency in the pricing of its services. For example, Yahoo! UK/Canada provide free POP3 but not US and India. Similiarly, Yahoo! US provides free alerts while India charges for it.

Hi,
I think rediffmail.com has first introduced the UNLIMITED Storage and not Yahoo. However I am a regular and faithful user of yahoo mail for over 8 years and I simply love it. Disposable email id or not, my address in the web is an Yahoo Id, I am proud to say that. Congratulations on your Birthday and we are all with you.

Pawel | March 28th, 2007 at 4:44 am
Sounds great - unlimited storage.
But how about increasing maximum size of attachment?
Jigar shah | March 28th, 2007 at 4:48 am
Thats good and bad too..
I always see my storage meter going up and i start deleting mails. Now i m going to be more lazy then ever. I wont ever delete a mail. But as there are so many i will keep searching for them :) I think Yahoo should quickly implement new search tht was introduced in older yahoo mail in newer one. And of course give me my older address book back. And try to learn from live mail and gmail about simplicity and ease of use.
Yahoo! Mail User | March 28th, 2007 at 5:31 am
From Joe Beaulaurier:
“For those earlier comments complaining of the lack of disposable addresses or spam in their Yahoo! account, for a mere pittance ($20 I think) each year, a Yahoo! Mail Plus account pays off in spades. http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/
Otherwise, you’re getting a free ride, how can you bitch?”
How can you NOT “bitch” about why we don’t get disposable email addresses for free when almost everyone else without the “@yahoo.com” domain does? It would be dumb not to “bitch” about it and stand-up for equality. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to protect myself from spam for free?
It would be kinda dumb to waste $20/year or whatever the amount when Gmail offers unlimited disposable email addresses for free.
I don’t want to hang around Yahoo! Mail users who use words like “bitch” and pay $20/year or whatever and waste their money paying for features that Gmail offers for free. Perhaps it’s time for me to delete all my Yahoo! Mail accounts and move to Gmail.
Too bad Yahoo! couldn’t smarten up earlier and offer larger storage and other important features (like AddressGuard) for free to keep loyal users from moving to Gmail. I’m disappointed.
Dexter | March 28th, 2007 at 5:34 am
I too have been a loyal Yahoo! user since the past 10 years. Frankly speaking, I don’t give a hoot for unlimited storage. Hell, I’d take that 4 MB of storage any day, if Yahoo give me more filters and better spam protection. 15 filters is way too less, most of my filters are used for spam and it still doesn’t stop at the inbox.
10 year old account = lotsa spam, I mean, back then there weren’t any anonymous/fake/disposable mail services, we didn’t know how spambots worked, spam wasn’t even a problem back then.
Who really wants unlimited storage now? I mean its not like we can actually store large files and use it like a NAS or whatever. Besides, now that you can store files online for free in any of those 1000s of filehosting sites, I really don’t see any value in having unlimited storage.
I know that I’d probably get a reply advising me to purchase Yahoo! Mail Plus, but I have no reason to, except for the said filters.
I don’t get it, the way I see it, it’d be cheaper to add more filters than increase the storage space. I’m sure users will appreciate that more. Or maybe make a few of your value-added services free, like POP3 access free.
Oh and Mr. Kremer, I’d rather have that birthday cake.
Rony Shahidain | March 28th, 2007 at 6:02 am

Hi John,
I’m a long time Yahoo Mail Plus user. I really love it. It does everything I need, and I’d be completely lost without. Thank you for the unlimited storage. That’s a real bonus.
I ask one thing:
Is it possible to develop a way to have sub-folders in the folders area? That would so help the way I organize my client’s messages.
Just wondering.
Thanks,
bfg
mb | March 28th, 2007 at 6:07 am
Hmm … wasn’t it Google that first promised “infinity plus 1 storage”? Wasn’t that way back on April 1, 2005? Remember how they shocked Yahoo and Microsoft and revolutionized online apps? You guys have been fighting to copy Google’s massive quota and speedy user interface ever since.
(Reference - http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/01/145241)
Now, two years later, Google is at 2.8 gigs and increasing every day. Are you expecting another April 1 announcement from Google, and you’re just trying to beat them to the punch?
While I appreciate the “infinite storage”, it seems kinda like a cheap shot — you steal their original idea, pretend it’s your own idea, and announce it less than a week before April Fools Day.
C’mon, Yahoo, you can do better than that! Be original. Be innovative. Come up with your own ideas!
Boss Lepton | March 28th, 2007 at 6:16 am
I’m actually quite thrilled with this prospect, however there are more important things which I’m more concerned of. Compared with gmail, yahoo doesn’t filter out spam mails that efficiently. I know that you are proud of the achievement that yahoomail processes more than 200Gb of data every 10 minutes, how many of those are really spam mails? These are redundant and would potentially cost lots of dissatisfaction and imagine all those wasted resources. Maybe a move towards more efficient spam mail filtering would be a better move :D
cheers, i welcome any comments on my email
Trozzur | March 28th, 2007 at 6:22 am

Tom | March 28th, 2007 at 6:29 am
I’d rather have a more stable and speedier Yahoo! Mail than unlimited storage. The last few months I’ve been unable to access Yahoo! Mail way too many times. That, or it takes way too long to load. Also, Notes and Calendar are still not integrated in the mail app. Let’s hope this marketing BS doesn’t overload Yahoo! Mail any more than it already is.
amazed | March 28th, 2007 at 6:39 am
Are you guys freakin kidding me. My Gmail account is horrible. Yahoo rocks. Gmail was swamped with spam the second day I got it. It is a a pain the way it handles pictures and threads. Oh and the crashes are painful in gmail.
Of course Yahoo inc. mail box size originally in response to Gmail. Thats called business and staying with your competitors. When your the old kid on block you don’t have to be creative just offer what people can get if they go elsewhere. People won’t leave if you offer them the same as the new kids. Its the new kids that need to keep stepping it up.
Yes I completely agree I wish yahoo would offer disposable email address and pop forwarding for free. I would pay but I know the price is go up and I will be addicted to the extra features…..
Well at least we have Gmail for disposable email. I create and account forward it to my yahoo and then delete it when it becomes bogged down by spam….works great.
Thanks Yahoo
Neil | March 28th, 2007 at 6:48 am
But is it still going to be riddled with coloured banner advertising?
Ajaxy goodness and unlimited storage is great but it’s nothing if you still get told to Buy a new phone or Bet with William Hill via horrible coloured adverts that somtimes take up half my screen.

Good job Yahoo! I’ve been & am still a BIG fan of Yahoo! since day one!!
I still have 1 comment tho’. If one browses the Yahoo Help (topics ranging from setting up webcam to anything tech. to deal with Yahoo products) is severely lacking the REAL help. To me it looks likes that service is there just for name sake and does’nt really try to help!!
The point to remember is that, people WILL look for help only in dire situations and Yahoo should remember to provide a meaning solution.
C’on Yahoo, you are much more capable than that and it just takes 1 good product manager to put things into right perspective.
HAPPY BIRHTDAY YAHOO. Love Yahoo and keep loving Yahoo!!
tb | March 28th, 2007 at 7:08 am
For years I used Yahoo Mail. When Gmail went public I switched to it and never ever looked back.. Never missed anything.
Now I’m looking my inbox size.. it’s only 648MB. After almost 4 years of usage! What gmail is offering me? 3 GB! Being creative is a hard thing, yes. You need to find ways other than duplicating to attract people I guess.
Current GUI in my opinion just sucks! Another duplication from Outlook (or any other Windows MUA out there) Gmail’s is like a “real web page” and it’s functional enough. You can’t even play duplicate conversation grouping yet..
Being first in web mail is not something to be proud of today. Be creative please.. Try to do something that we really need, or what gmail hasn’t done yet..
Myndspace | March 28th, 2007 at 7:31 am
Now then, seeing as Yahoo has around 73 million users, one must pause and wonder, what of the Chat Room experience. Unlimited mail and all that is SWEET yes, and a HUGE thank you on that. But a majority of chat room users are swamped by spambots, logging in problems are rampant, text limits are trunicated, booting problems and exploits, predators, stalkers what have you; are there REALLY 73 million users, or in actuality maybe 20 million with the rest being spam bots? The Yahoo Chat Room experience is in dire need of a large scale upgrade!

i´m happy for the new. I´m one of the proud users of a Rocketmail Account. I still remember the day that my mail anounce the change to Yahoo. I got some sad, but during the time I saw that it was a good change.
today they anounce me that my free account will be free storage. and now I say agani. they did it again! I´m one that can say I saw the first time that they made diference. several years later they make again.

Wow!
Unlimited storage is really great for Yahoo! Mail users, certainly makes a couple of gigs look paltry, eh?
Also, congrats on the birthday! I was working at Yahoo! when we acquired RocketMail and the team of people we acquired from RocketMail may have been worth much more than the service. I worked with a lot of the ex-RocketMailers over the years and had some great experiences with them.
Cheers,

Hey Guys! Congrats on the birthday, and THANKS for the unlimited storage!
But PLEASE, sort out the problems with displaying the true recipient in the Inbox, instead of just my yahoo address.
And what about us MailPlus folks who keep paying and paying? Are you dropping the service and refunding, or will be get increased benefits (forwarding, advanced filters, SMTP, unlimited extra accounts to check?)
Just keep improving the service… I FAR prefer Yahoo Mail Beta’s interface to GMail.
Congrats

This is a great thing, but sadly I will not be able to utilise it despite wanting to. I, like many people, had a RocketMail email address that we were forced to merge with out Yahoo accounts. The email address was not used for a period of time and expired, and unlike a Yahoo address it can not be reactivated. Also a new email address selected as a replacement.
I am left with the choice of setting up a new account that will be time consuming and costly because of moving my other yahoo services across including Yahoo Groups, Flickr and upcoming. Alternatively I will need to continually log in and out of two accounts.
Sadly if yahoo can not allow RocketMail addresses to be reactivated, something I can see no practical reason not to allow, then I will begrudgingly be sticking with a competitor.

Great! Yahoo! is doing so many things this recent years and it keeps getting better and better. Even though I am a great fan of Yahoo!, to be honest, Google might have the ability to catch up. Ermm… Google is already one of Yahoo!’s greatest competitors (perhaps, the greatest). But I strongly believe that Yahoo! will overwhelm Google in no time.
Cool… unlimited e-mail storage. I’ve not expected Yahoo! to do such a crazy thing for all the Yahoo! users. I love you, Yahoo! You’re the best!
May the spirit of Yahoo! last forever!

So I pay for expanded mail, i pay to for yahoo to host my website, etc - am I getting any money back now that yahoo mailboxes will have unlimited storage?
Michael | March 28th, 2007 at 12:02 pm
Thanks ! I’ve been a (loyal) user of Yahoo! since 2000.
Not only when it comes to mail, but also in relation to using Yahoo! as my starting page (one of them, thanks to tabbed browsing) on all the computers I have access to (never quite got “caught” by Google).
Even though Yahoo! closed down the Danish Yahoo! (well, not closed down entirely, but that’s the best I can rate yahoo.dk in comparison with yahoo.com).
Anyway: keep up the good work, but please remember that some of your (more loyal) users have actually *paid* for expanded mail…
I’m not among those unfortunately, but I completely understand if somebody who have paid for expanded mail might get a little…well…upset…if no “kickback” is provided.
Chris | March 28th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
One of the benefits to the Yahoo! Mail Plus was larger storage. Now that everyone gets unlimited do you have plans to add some feature, or features, to the Mail Plus? Please say, “Yes.” Thanks.
David Whiddon | March 28th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
very good work. the thing i would be prefering instead of unlimited space is more filters to be available. I have all my filters used up trying to keep my large volume of incomming e-mails in order, but there just isnt enough.
Mera Naam | March 28th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Congrats on 10th yr Bday.
Request list:
1) POP3 - PLEASE… Otherwise I am this close to swapping to Gmail
2) Disposable Email addresses - I hate to use Mailinator.com address
3) Feature - Move-To folder? It has been in Beta forever
4) Plans to move out of BETA? I haven’t seen any real updates in a while now.
5) Online Chat like Gmail, embedded within web page.
6) Color coding based on incoming mail - highlight emails from certain individuals.
7) What else….
You are doing a fantastic job. Keep it up!
Doug | March 28th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Dear Santa,
I have a wish that Yahoo Mail can make the spam filtering work as great as it does in Gmail.
Other than that, I think yahoo Mail has a nicer interface than most webmail systems.
Regards
Jerry J. Davis | March 28th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
This is way cool, but, are you going to remove the viral marketing tag at the bottom of every sent email? That’s the main thing that caused me to switch to Google’s gMail for my business correspondence. Much more professional looking as well as free.
Viral email marketing is passé now anyway. Not to mention offensive.
Toby | March 28th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
10 years ago, when I was 14 years old, I had no clue what an email was. No clue how to search stuff on the internet. Now I’m constantly browsing stuff online and sending emails and instant messaging. Having unlimited mail storage is amazing and its free too!! I just hope I don’t get flooded with spam mail.
Sam | March 28th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I’m proud to be a Yahoo!.

Currently, you take my money every year for Yahoo! Mail Plus. So what additional benefit do I get since I am a premium fee-based service person? Also, I would like to receive a copy of the Yahoo Terms of Service Agreement.

JOHN | March 28th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Thanks a lot!!
Several months ago I asked Yahoo if it was going to increase storage for its paying customers (me included) Never did get any response to my emails.
So, I switched to INBOX.com, paid $29.95 for 30 GIGS of storage, up from my 2 gigs (for $19.95 at Yahoo Plus) and spent literally days transferring my pictures and photos over to INBOX.com…
NOW it would seem, I will have to start sending everything BACK to my Yahoo Plus account and swallow the loss at INBOX as they do not give refunds…I really DO prefer the Yahoo mail and Photo system….
Life just isn’t fair!!!
:-(

I’m wondering if Yahoo is following Gmail in their Infinite+ storage plan Google bragged about for some ttime. From the Gmail home page:
Lots of space
Over 2833.691610 megabytes (and counting) of free storage so you’ll never need to delete another message.
Keith | March 28th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
I wonder if this will be implemented with BizMail
thesuperstar | March 28th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
yahoo has the worst spam filter. i get the same spam every day, and yes, i mark then as spam, but yahoo filters are weak like and scared like France.

Hi, i think it’s great! It’s the best webmail! Wath about a free Yahoo Browser? It could be good and impulse Yahoo Mail and even Yahoo Messenger. PS: more space for attachment. Bye
Dexter | March 28th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Anyways, I prepared a list of what we users REALLY want from Yahoo! (for free, of course. If Google can do it, you guys can too)
10. Better interface. Please stick to the standards. Beta mail doesn’t work in Opera, the most standards compliant browser.
9. Integrated Yahoo Messenger chat
8. Grouping of mails (Conversations)
7. Increase attachment size
6. Better mail search
5. Email tagging system
4. Disposable Addresses
3. More (Unlimited?) filters
2. POP3 access
1. Better Spam protection
oilers84 | March 28th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
How about scrapping the unlimited storage idea & instead work on a real spam filter. This verification key that has to be put in EVERY time an email is sent is insane. How could it possibly be spam when I reply to a message already in my inbox. I mean really!

S | March 28th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Yahoo has something that constantly interests me. Though its not the best, it comes second best. Yes, Yahoo offered huge storage when stingy hotmail offered only 2mb. When gmail entered the arena yahoo was forced to provide 100mb first and then 1 GB. But yahoomail interface is slow to load, only ads load fast, not emails. Now the unlimited storage thing is so attractive, but speed up your mail servers YAHOO! Otherwise… there is no use for your unlimited storage.
Fred | March 28th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
In my 11th year of Yahoo Mail usage, the first 5 years accessing the web via WebTV-no PC- and only once did I change my user name and lose all my User info including my photo albums. The Spam comes and goes, Firefox or not. My Space, Blogger et al are waging a daily battle. To me, it doesn’t matter, there’s one-click deletion via the spam filter. The good news is the spam is diverted 99% of the time to the Spam folder. I never spent a dime on any Yahoo services and yet I get easy access to my Blog, News, videos and bookmarks via My Yahoo so if I ever get invited to GMail it would just mean extra work transferring and updating my contacts. I’m lazy and carzy like that.
Yaahooooooooo!
Fred | March 28th, 2007 at 9:47 pm
I meant crazy like that, not carzy. Carzy is beyond crazy !

That’s an awesome birthday gift! I’ve been a Yahoo user from day one and have always loved it…with one exception. I’ve had an account so long my geocities account was folded into the company way back when, and, that holdover from another time is becoming a problem. Most of the spam I get is directed at my geocities address, but there isn’t a way to delete a geocities account without also deleting the corresponding Yahoo account. Or is there?
Thanks for your time,
rp

Thank you for all your enthusiastic comments and input on our storage announcement today. While I can’t promise to answer each of your specific questions at the moment, I would like to take the opportunity to address some of the re-occurring questions and concerns on the blog.
Spam:
Some of you have expressed concern about an increase in spam. While spam is an industry-wide issue, Yahoo! has made fighting email spam a top priority. We are taking a multi-faceted approach to protecting the inbox, including enhanced technologies, public policy efforts, industry collaboration and consumer awareness. We also have a behind the scenes team that continually evaluates the spam that comes into our system in order to enhance our spam filters and better protect our users.
We work to empower our customers to help as well. Individual users provide us with a continuous stream of feedback daily via our “This is Spam” Button, and we in turn share that intelligence to help protect the entire Yahoo! Mail community.
In addition, we understand that user protection doesn’t stop at the borders of our network. So we partner with other industry leaders to create tools, such as email authentication, to make sure that all Yahoo! customers feel secure online. We are doing this through DomainKeys, an email authentication technology we invented; CertifiedEmail, which notifies users of emails from verified senders; and collaboration with industry thought leaders including the AntiPhishing Working Group.
Anti-abuse limits:
We have anti-abuse limits in place to monitor suspicious activity and to ensure our users have a safe, efficient and reliable Web mail experience. We do have controls in place to ensure that people benefit from the unlimited storage feature, but are not able to abuse the system. The goal of the Yahoo! Mail is to provide customers with the email capacity they need, not to turn Web mail into online file storage.
Speed:
Some of you asked about the performance speed of our new Yahoo! Mail beta service. Performance is definitely one of our top priorities. Rest assured that we work hard to reduce loading times so that user emails and content is readily accessible to them anywhere. Based on our knowledge, there shouldn’t be any significant difference from accessing Yahoo! Mail through the AT&T Yahoo! broadband service or directly from Yahoo! Mail.
Thank you for all your comments on enhanced features – like sub-folders, free POP3, free AddressGuard, increased attachment limit, etc. This is really good feedback that our team will take into consideration as we continue to look for ways to improve Yahoo! Mail for you.

Thank you Yahoo…I’ve been with your mail since 1998. I like the new mail, and I’ve been testing and commenting on it for several months now. I hate the spam also, but your filter seems to work pretty well, and I click on this is/is not spam when it slips up. Today though, I went to send email from my account, and I had to enter a captcha, and a difficult one at that. Upper and lower, six and a lot of interference. Is this really necessary? I’m using that new sign-in seal, which doesn’t seem to do anything. My eyes have trouble with some of those captchas and I hate having to try so hard to figure out what letter is showing through the mess, not to say doing caps. Are we going to have to do that for every email we send out?
Henok | March 29th, 2007 at 1:32 am
I had switched to Gmail because I was verrrrrrrrrrrrry upset with yahoo for how it worked and gmail looked much better. But starting from Yahoo Mail Beta’s introduction, I have returned to yahoo. I massively like how yahoo mail beta works.
And now, UNLIMITED STORAGE?!!!!
I think I am here for good.

Instead of increasing all those mailbox size(s), it would have been better, if u consider increasing file attachment size per mail from 10 mb to something like 25 to 50 MB, (Will jump off-air, if u offer 150MB!!!)
…Thanks for the reliable& coolest service i ever had
Dan | March 29th, 2007 at 3:11 am
I left Yahoo! Mail because of spam and now use gmail. I can’t understand where the guy who says his gmail gets swamped with spam is getting all his mail from. My gmail spam folder is consistently full but none of it gets through to my inbox. I must have about one a month which I report, then it disappears - a very different experience to how it was with Yahoo!. I think the unlimited storage move is a great idea but I’d need better spam filters - or evidence that they are now in place - to tempt me back. I’m nowhere near filling my gmail quota which seems to grow faster than I can fill it.
erius | March 29th, 2007 at 4:15 am
well thanks for the YM integration with the Mail Beta.

I have been a happy user every since Rocket Mail. One thing I miss in the Beta is the ability to with one click send Photos to Yahoo! Photos and other attachments to My Yahoo! Briefcase (which has not benefited lately from increases in storage limits AFAIK).
Hansi | March 29th, 2007 at 7:06 am
instead increasing the mailbox space you could also
- improve the customer service (responsetime up to ONE month)
- introduce IMAP
- introduce a whitelist

Congrads Yahoo,
I have been using Yahoo mail since I have known what email is. And I will be using it despite all the challengers in the field ( total respect to gmail though).
There is only ONE issue that I would REALLY love yahoo to have. That is having a FOLDER section in its beta mail so that I can store my attachments and important files on the go. This would stop me emailing myself all these attachments all the time.
Please yahoo…. this would be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael | March 29th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Yahoo would be wise to allow easier access to its email via pop and other services such as gmail. It is one the the main reason I recommend gmail, along with the storage limits. Also gmail tends to have much better spam protection.
Simply adding more storage is not enough of an answer to drive people back to yahoo mail. Study Gmail - they are doing it right in a way that makes people want to use it. Its why they have grown 68% in the last year.

“Unlimited” sounds like marketing.. nothing is unlimited. Just because you’re allowed to breathe an unlimited amount of oxygen doesn’t mean you can have all the oxygen on the planet. You simply can’t consume enough of it to make a difference.
If you actually want to know what you get, the legal department will tell you. Read the TOS (from Yahoo Mail, click Help > Terms of Service) - and then read Section 13: http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/utos/utos-173.html
–
13. GENERAL PRACTICES REGARDING USE AND STORAGE
You acknowledge that Yahoo! may establish general practices and limits concerning use of the Service, including without limitation the maximum number of days that email messages, message board postings or other uploaded Content will be retained by the Service, the maximum number of email messages that may be sent from or received by an account on the Service, the maximum size of any email message that may be sent from or received by an account on the Service, the maximum disk space that will be allotted on Yahoo!’s servers on your behalf, and the maximum number of times (and the maximum duration for which) you may access the Service in a given period of time. You agree that Yahoo! has no responsibility or liability for the deletion or failure to store any messages and other communications or other Content maintained or transmitted by the Service. You acknowledge that Yahoo! reserves the right to log off accounts that are inactive for an extended period of time. You further acknowledge that Yahoo! reserves the right to modify these general practices and limits from time to time.

So, not really unlimited.. but, as others have pointed out.. who cares. It’s a numbers game, and most people use very little storage.

That’s nice, I guess, but I’ve been moving everything over to GMail simply because yahoo! mail only gives me 15 filters to keep my mail out of the automatic trash (”bulk mail”) bin!
So, it “serves the customer” to have 50GB of mail storage “so you never have to delete a message again” (text borrowed directly from GMail promos), but there is no effective means to ensure it gets in your inbox in the first place?

Happy Birthday Yahoo!
Please don’t forget ACCESSIBILITY when designing new UI. Screen reader users need to be able to navigate quickly to messages.
Free POP mail
Combining multiple Yahoo accounts into a single account would also be helpful
Yahoo! Mail User | March 30th, 2007 at 9:33 am
I forgot to add something!
You let users create IDs with a single dot, but the dot has to be followed by AT LEAST 4 characters.
For example:
yahoo.user@yahoo.com IS allowed, but
yahoo.use@yahoo.com IS NOT allowed.
What’s with this? This is ridiculous. People with short last names are forced to use this kind of format: “lastname.firstname” rather than “firstname.lastname”.
Also, could you let us use more dots? I want to be able to create IDs like, “yahoo.mail.rocks”.
Thanks.
Scott | March 30th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Personally, i’d be happier if you’d just introduce subfolders (and sub-sub folders) and allow users to set up filters accordingly.
That’s one thing Gmail has on you with it’s tagging. It’s still not quite what I want but it’s better than not having subfolders in Yahoo! Mail.
Also it would be nice to have forwarding filters….
Ong Teck Sheng | March 30th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
I love Yahoo! Mail!
I personally like the new user-friendly interface of the Mail.
Just hope that with the infinite storage space, you would be able to remove the uploading space restriction (for uploading photos/videos).
Thanks Yahoo!
You are GREAT!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
XTRaze | March 31st, 2007 at 1:51 am
Inlimited = Infinite.
And U guys know what,
Infinity +1 cant be anything.
If you take 3000MB as infinity, there must not be a 3001.
As there is, 3000 is not equal to infinity.
Like that, even if Yahoo use all the servers in the Universe, They cant give Infinite eMail storage even for a single person.

I agree that in addition to the Unlimited Space offer, a Whitelist Option would cut down on Spam problems tremendously, especially if a POP/IMAP Client Option were made available for Free Yahoo users. I have also had problems with slow account access. I think all this AJAX techie stuff is bogging down the loading of Yahoo Web Pages in general. Also, I have tight security and anti-spyware with ad blocking on this Laptop Computer, so there are possible conflicts there. It took me over a month to figure out how to use Mail Viewing Pane Tabs to get downloadable message views. Tutorials are helpful, but the old “Printable View” was a much handier way of getting downloadable views of messages. What you saw was what you got off line from the downloaded messages.

The information provided in the Main Post above is somehow wrong or incomplete. Yahoo! mail was initially providing 4 Mb AS WELL AS 6 Mb accounts (may be just in few markets…but it was)!!!!!
Someone needs to double check before making posts.

You can send any file with any file size to your email account with a simple right click and send file (including yahoo). The freeware will automatically split and merge the file. You can also send whole folders to your email account as it will zip them up. You can download it from http://emailer.zapto.org

Yahoo mail is great, but to cut down on spam I have been using:
http://bypassrestriction.com and have had much success!

Congratulations!
Being a Yahoo PLUS (premium?) member, I wonder what the added storage will do for me if I can’t send bigger attachments.
Also, will I be able to use some of this extra storage as offline storage, like with Briefcase?
Again, congratulations on 10 years!

Thank you yahoo!! I love you guys. You are the BEST!
Musa Opiyo | April 3rd, 2007 at 11:47 am
Yahoo Mail! has been the best. I must admit that I have faltered a few times between Hotmail and Gmail and I always find myself coming back to Yahoo. After 6 years of Yahooing, I can definitely say that I am now completely sold out. Congratulations for a job well done!

Are you guys doing something to have a better calendar. Everyone out there have a better calendar than you guys (gmail) and it is really frustrating to have this outdated calendar. Come on guys you can do better. You already have it integrated in the Yahoo Mail bar but the actual calendar looks so 2003. Please do something.
Ayub | April 3rd, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Seems to me you want to here what you like most. Otherwise you wouldn’t have deleted my comment which highlighted the fact that http://www.rediffmail.com is the pioneer of unlimited storage. And you are just a copycat.
Go ahead delete this comment too! But that will remain a fact.

Ayub: It’s quite possible that your original comment got tangled up in our spam filter, because you’ll note that at least three other comments came through referencing Rediffmail.

Hi, That’s great news. BUT will it take some time to implement? My Yahoo account is still 1 GB. And other updates recently announced ( like adding check boxes in yahoo mail beta ) are still not visible in my account. is there any delay in these as well?
Thanks

Effective, Efficient, Enormous mail storage,
Simply the BEST!
Philip | April 4th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Yeahs you got that one good and sharp! Makes me wanna work for Yahoo! I love Yahoo as it doesn’t delete my email account or deactivated it so quickly as Hotmail is so irritatingly famous for doing. =D
Tushar | April 4th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Dear Yahoo,
This is great news. I can now simplify my life and work only with 1 account. While I love Yahoo Mail, I had found the 1 GB limit far too low. To solve this, I wound up opening about 3 Yahoo accounts, 5 Gmail accounts and about 4 other assorted (Hotmail, Speedmail etc) accounts. Every time an account approached it’s limit, I would open a new account. The resultant problem was that if I ever had to find something, I had to search in 10 different accounts !!!
One more thing you guys should do is remove the limit on size of attachments. Today the files we exchange are quite large and often exceed 10 mb.
Regards
Tushar

Infinite Storage Cooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
indrinita | April 5th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
Well I for one am quite impressed with the unlimited storage thing - I have a yahoo account that I’ve had since 1999, I still use it every so often, but I end up using my gmail account (that I opened five years later) because of all the easy to use features. Yahoo is still on my menu though, as is hotmail for example. Keep up the good work!
Kotes | April 5th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Dear Yahoo mail Engineers…!
First of all congratulations for your great job. It’s very good features which you are going to introduce like unlimited storage, chat in mail and all.
I am suggesting that you can give this option to our users which is not yet provided by any other mail providers: voice talk using mail only.
Then it’s be very great for us(Yahoo).
Thanks,
Kotes

I am a YahooMail user since 2000 and I love it ! I love the interface and all apps like the Address Book or Calendar.
I wish Yahoo! will give yahoo.com user free access to POP3, IMAP and HTTPS while comosing a message.
I hate gmail cause they scan my emails and put a lot of publicity into my mail box, it must be illegal ! I hate their interface, you find your sent messages in your inbox.
quin | April 9th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Heeeeeeeeeey, Yahoo! Mail guys!! Congrats!!! *hugs, kisses and applauds out loud* I’ve been a proud user of Yahoo! Mail for 8 years now and I haven’t changed it… It just keeps getting better and better every year! The rest of providers have nothing to do against you! You know, keep it that way!! First it’s email, then… Maybe the world… HOORAY! FOR YAHOO!
Smitha | April 9th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Yahoo! has miles to go when it comes to spam filters. I have obvious spam like ‘find your new f**k friend’ coming up in my inbox. What’s worse, I can’t find a feedback button on the page. It’s either hidden for nasty reasons or you just can’t give feedback on y! mail.
Luke | April 9th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Awesome. I’ve been with Yahoo since year 1, and never had a problem at all. Another happy customer. Keep it coming!
Yeah | April 10th, 2007 at 5:18 am
Heh, companies don’t move unless Google moves first. Well, someone has to follow the leader :).
Unlimited email storage?, yeah, for sure: everybody knows that Yahoo has unlimited Petabytes, no wait, EXAbytes to all of us and of course, everybody knows that there won’t be any limit on the attachments size.
Yahoo, try to innovate instead copying every damn google’s idea :P.
who's there? | April 10th, 2007 at 5:25 am
Congrats on this update, guys! I’m a more recent customer, but its always been 100% satisfaction with Yahoo Mail. I CAN’T WAIT for the unlimeted storage! Inbox… is… bursting!
Min Thu | April 10th, 2007 at 7:10 am
That would be very nice! We will never have to worry about the limit.
Dave | April 10th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I wish for Yahoo! to be able to automatically check my other POP3 accounts and download the messages in to the appropriate folders. Right now, I have to log in and manually check the other POP3 accounts. Even if this was a feature only available to Yahoo! Mail Plus users, I would gladly pay!!
Mukundhan | April 10th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
I have been using Yahoo! Mail ever since its inception and i can nothing but feel amazed at this transition. I still remember using the 4MB mailbox, the arrival of yahoo.com and yahoo.co.in addresses, a 10MB mail box, followed by a 100MB, 250MB and a 1 GB finally. It is not surprising to see that Yahoo! is offering infinite space now. Yahoo! is simply the best. Other mail providers, watch out! Yahoo is underway!
Mukundhan | April 10th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
Increasing the attachment size would do a world of good. Mere increasing the mailbox space won’t help.
Gustavo Zamora Martinez | April 11th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
Me parese grandeoso el que yahoo incremente las cuentas de yahoo es pero poder ser uno de los veneficioados con esta gra selebracion.

Wow, great for us Yahoo! users, I have had Yahoo! Mail for about 6 years. I have used Hotmail and I love the fact that you can change colors in Yahoo! Mail classic, but I want to have other color schemes in Yahoo! Mail Beta because I love Y! Mail Beta better than classic, and purple and beige is getting kind of annoying. I would rather use Yahoo! Mail full of ads than GMail becuase GMail has no folders, just “Labels.” Yahoo Mail far exceeds Hotmail, as does Yahoo! Mail Beta to Windows Live Hotmail Beta.
Yahoo! Mail User | April 11th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Gmail’s planning to give us more features. (See: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=suggest)
Will you give us more features? I’d rather have more features than more space.
I cannot understand why Gmail’s willing to do everything to make our lives convenient, yet Yahoo! doesn’t.

In the past I had dial-up with Earthlink and, of course, access to use email. I purposely rarely used my email with them because of the ease of use with Yahoo. (my home page is also Yahoo….love Yahoo). However, I finally today, 4/12/07 was able to access Yahoo Beta to see for myself the future new email program. I know, of course, I am just one person, but I sincerely wish you would keep the same email program. I only have one reason for this is that is almost exactly like Earthlink’s which was an “eye” sore. I have always appreciated Yahoo mail as it’s easy on the eye. Messages standout!!!!
The reason for not being able to access Yahoo Beta for email previously is my browser is not compatible..yet! I use Camino. I am an fanatic Mac user. Still boggles my mind why anyone would use IBM and the clones and microsoft!
Imelda | April 12th, 2007 at 11:34 am
I want to be able to send e-mails to over 50 recipients at once. I have been with you for many years and I should be able to do so without restrictions. I cannot even do that via my paid e-mail service provider either. What gives?
Alex | April 12th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
In terms of loading images, Yahoo Mail Beta does a better job than GMail. I guess I will be moving to use Yahoo Mail…
Mustafa Arif | April 13th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
I’m glad you reminisce of RocketMail… but why do you have this ridiculous policy of not allowing users to re-activate their RocketMail account when it expires through non-usage? Apparently Yahoo! Mail accounts are re-activated but customer support tell me that as my account was @rocketmail.com I have to create a new one with a different Yahoo ID!
eGaming Supply (Justice McCay) | April 14th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
This is just fantastic. Thanks Yahoo!, for always being the #1 webmail service! :)
I can’t believe you guys have gone so far, and continue to prosper!
Go Yahoo!.
Yahoo! Mail user | April 15th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
What is the point of offering unlimited storage if we can only send attached files up to 10 MB (up to 20 MB for plus users), a real blow to broadband users wanting to push their connections.
Prajwal Kabra | April 16th, 2007 at 7:19 am
