Coalition crackdown on lottery spammers

Yahoo LotteryWhat generally increases when the overall economy declines? That’s right – crime. And these days, when you receive an email that proclaims that you’ve won the “Yahoo! Lottery,” the financially-pressured optimist in you might be more inclined to bite the bait.

Last May, we filed a lawsuit against “Yahoo! Lottery” spammers who use our brand to trick unsuspecting users into handing over personal data to claim a prize. And we’re making progress on catching these scammers, but we’re concerned that they may step up efforts to dupe people impacted by these tough times.

Today we announced a public-private coalition with Microsoft, the African Development Bank, and Western Union to allow victims of lottery scams to upload police reports we can use with the goal of tracking down these devious criminals and developing better ways of protecting people online. INTERPOL has gotten involved to inform international law enforcement agencies about the initiative and provide guidance on critical information to collect to identify trends and common patterns.

Here’s how it works. Yahoo! and the other coalition members have set up dedicated email addresses and Web sites (ours is http://antispam.yahoo.com/phishingtips) where lottery scam victims — those who took the bait and handed over personal information — can share details of the police report they have filed. These reports may be helpful to other coalition members and law enforcement in fighting lottery scammers.

For readers who spot a scam but don’t fall for it, we have tips for you, too. First off, don’t ever reply to the message, even as a joke. You don’t want to be encouraging these guys. Instead, click the “Spam” button, which helps us and our anti-spam systems block these types of messages and kick these criminals off the Internet. We also have a form you can use to report lottery scams and other kinds of abuse originating from Yahoo! users.

As we’ve said before, no one ever wins the Yahoo! Lottery. And that’s simply because there is no Yahoo! Lottery. We’re on a mission to protect you from these online predators, but in addition to what we’re doing on our end, you can also find some tips on how you can protect yourself on our anti-spam resource site.

yahoo is a great FREE service and having the SPAM filter is also very nice.why not make a SCAM filter.i “win” about 4 to 6 nigerian lotteries a day .the last one sent a phone number.there should be professional POLICING ,ie feds, bunco ,fbi whatever that work as hard as these would be thieves.it seems to me the only thing that even comes out of nigeria is scam.i see you are making moves in this direction but more should be done from the departments of law. no reply required, thanks

Thanks for looking into this matter. I am so tired of scammers who lurk in the secrecy of the Internet
to try to take away what some honest, hard working person has saved for a rainy day. I also am tired of all
the ads that we are bombarded with from every direction.
I know bills have to be paid and they have to make a profit, but it’s the television, radio, magazines, newspapers, sign boards, mail, telephones. Help, we are enundated with all of it.
Thanks

I have been a victom of scam and it did take my bank account past the zero balance-It was reported to sheriff and Bank account shut down and a notice of warning was written in our local newspaper as well the FBI was notified, soon after became victom to recieveing email from the FBI email with FBI web site and logo, wanting contact with me and to report all scams to them by text or phone and both, and by clicking on this FBI web site wich was in truth the bad guys-the stolen FBI web site sent me a Bug that did shut my computer down for 2 mnths.befor it with lots of work and money was repaired, cleaned and deemed useable again=Bottom line is we are on our own,the law enforcements will not stop and persue the atackers, because not enough time in the day for it.

There is a phishing e-mail right now being sent to yahoo e-mailer saying some one has used your account the it goes to 2nd page asking for account number and password it also states this is a secure website and has fdic and equal housing athuroity logo. then goes to next page asking for all your info. But it states on first page if you don,t respond that the credit union will close out your account. Per Linda Frye whom I talked tp by phone here at the main office in Missouri this is not a legal document from her office don,t fill this out and let others know call her if you get this letter the goverment is being notifed also. Thanks

This here yahoo mail thing has been a very educational experience the whole spam scam thing even the production and the spam scam campaign itself is pretty good or the best one that is really spam scams connected semi-coherently, which was with the right incentive, intuitive knowledge and engineered tweaking, produced observable results though deletorious, even so they may be. Though apperantly resovable, with the right motive in educated rationalization of the present issues not all covered by the monetary climate but in part with the obstacles these clearing houses not revealed encounter. In the mailing campaigns so far that need the moratorium! To make the call put, but frankly there is a lot of spam presently not connected to scams that might need to be reported though that kind of makes the nigerian scams pretty much harmless by comparison to the ecoconic realism of ansuring one or the other immediate vs goal value in rewards say as to one purchase and or acquisitation of orientation.

I did not give permission to a spammer that had tap into an application for an online cash loan. This company maximumplatinumusa sent me an e-mail trying to confirm me that they would be debiting 79.95 from my account without my permission; eventhough I didn’t tell them to and I did not even marked no when asked if I would like to be member. They did not have a phone number or anything to contact them with. My only hope is that they try to follow through with this debit.

I was sent a download of the antivirus software which displayed the microsoft logo shield. As many of you know it’s a virus and I had to get a new Visa cuz I gave them the info for registery codes. After contacting msn they said it had nothing to do with msn.Yet it utilizes their logo.BEWARE! I was also sent an e-mail saying I was the Irish Lottery winner under the guise of an FBI logo.I forwarded it to the FBI.we’ll see how they handle that one. As for spam I’ve unsubscribed to several spam ads only to find them reappearing in my inbox,so I’m not sure how well it works for others but I seem to find it confusing to use.
