Weekly Yahoo! Search Trends – October 29, 2010
Each week Yahoo! brings the most interesting and quirky trends to the forefront and Web Trend Expert Pam Woon highlights them on local and national broadcast. Searches for the controversial Lebron James commercial, the World Series, and the elections are sparking a lot of online interest this week. Check out the weekly video from The Daily Buzz.
Trend: Election Buzz
As we head into the home stretch of election season Yahoo! is buzzing with searches related to upcoming races and hot topics. The Yahoo! Ask America campaign is getting a landslide of questions. Top of the ticket? Proposition 19 in California. The proposition to legalize marijuana is up over 9,000% on Yahoo!. And the big California governor’s race is getting a buzz in both CA and nationally. In the Meg Whitman vs. Jerry Brown race searches are spiking 248% for Brown and 932% for Whitman. A senate race also generating searches well beyond state lines is the Harry Reid vs. Sharon Angle race in Nevada. An interesting trend, actually trending down in searches, Delaware. Users seem to be moving past the Christine O’Donnell vs. Chris Coons race.
Trend: World Series Trends
With the fall classic is upon us, and the Texas Rangers taking on the San Francisco Giants (GO GIANTS!!), some were hoping for a New York-Philly series, to boost TV ratings. But at least online, this matchup is a home run. Searches are triple what they were last year on Yahoo!. A hot topic is quirky giants closer Brian Wilson and his dyed black beard, now donned by Giants fans everywhere. Searches for “Brian Wilson’s beard” are up 161%.
Trend: Commercials & Lebron James
The NBA season has tipped off and Lebron James is king of the search engines. His new Nike ad is huge right now, numbers are soaring on Lebron. And speaking of commercials, Yahoo! is seeing ads trending extremely high this week, bigger than even some past Superbowls. The Old Spice spot -- the man your man can smell like -- that’s up 666% in searches on Yahoo!. The E-Trade talking baby ad is causing searches up 224%. And those Geico spots about wood-chucking woodchucks and the little pig who went wee-wee-wee all the way home. Up 113% on those.
