Yahoo! aggregates the billions of searches performed across Yahoo! properties to give the pulse on what people are thinking and talking about. Searches represent the people, an instant poll every moment of the day, looking into the fleeting moods and entrenched attitudes of Internet users across the world. Each week Yahoo! Web Life Editor Heather Cabot reveals these trends on local and national broadcast. Reaction to the verdict in the Casey Anthony murder trial, IMF Chief Dominique Strauss Kahn, summer movies, and The Beatles are all buzzing this week on Yahoo!.

Casey Anthony Trial
Reaction to the not guilty verdict and the sentencing in the Casey Anthony murder trial shook the web this week.  Anthony’s acquittal of murdering her two year old daughter stirred up outrage and disbelief online the moment the news broke.  Casey Anthony quickly became the top searched topic of the week on Yahoo!.

The case has been closely watched on the web ever since Caylee was first reported missing in 2008.  In fact, back then, the gruesome story riveted Yahoo! users – especially women and it became the second most searched news story of the entire year – even more sought out than the 2008 presidential election! The trial’s wall-to-wall coverage on the cable networks and live video streams of the proceedings spurred look-ups for graphic details about specific evidence, Anthony’s father, boyfriend, and her legal team.

IMF Chief DSK
Another case rocking the online world this week is the one against former IMF Chief Dominique Strauss Kahn – that could be falling apart due to revelations about the woman accusing him of sexual assault. Searches for Dominique Strauss Kahn are up 480% this week and the interest in the scandal is split evenly between men and women.

Summer Movie Buzz
Both guys and gals want to see a lot of the same movies this summer.  While more women than men put Transformers 3 at the top of their list, there was equal interest by both sexes in getting tickets for Monte Carlo, the mistaken identity comedy starring Selena Gomez. Larry Crowne starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts also generated some online box office buzz.

According to Yahoo!, this Week’s Top 10 Searched Summer Movies are:

  1. Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon
  2. Monte Carlo
  3. Larry Crowne
  4. Captain America
  5. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows II
  6. Friends with Benefits
  7. Horrible Bosses
  8. Cowboys and Aliens
  9. The Help
  10. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

According to Yahoo!, this Week’s Top 10 Searched Family Movies are:

  1. Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon (PG-13)
  2. Captain America (PG-13)
  3. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows II (PG-13)
  4. Kung-fu Panda 2 (PG)
  5. Cowboys and Aliens (PG-13)
  6. The Smurfs Movie (PG)
  7. Spy Kids 4 (PG)
  8. Zookeeper (PG)
  9. Cars 2 (G)
  10. Winnie The Pooh Movie (G)

Beatles Day
It’s Beatles Day this Sunday and every year, Liverpool celebrates the anniversary of the fab four’s return from their first US tour on July 10th, 1968.  Searches for “Beatles lyrics” are off the charts this month and the songs seem resonate across generations – 1 in 5 of the look-ups for “Beatles songs” come from people under age 24.
