Yahoo! aggregates the billions of searches performed across Yahoo! properties to give the pulse on what people are thinking and talking about. Searches represent the people, an instant poll every moment of the day, looking into the fleeting moods and entrenched attitudes of Internet users across the world. Each week Yahoo! Web Life Editor Heather Cabot reveals these trends on local and national broadcast. The Norway massacre, Amy Winehouse’s death, the US debt crisis, big business changes and summer drinks are all buzzing this week on Yahoo!.
Norway Massacre
Yahoo! Search trends show that people are following many of the big stories minute-by-minute. First up, the aftermath of the horrific shooting rampage and bombing in Norway. Since the event, people have been looking for details about the suspect’s family, his manifesto, maps of Norway, questions about Norway’s immigration policies and also Glenn Beck’s reaction to the tragedy.
Remembering Amy Winehouse
The funeral and inconclusive autopsy results for singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse dominated searches this week, as well. Fans mourned her death and also continued to research the grim history of other talented singers who left us too soon – especially those who died before their 27th birthdays’ including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.
Debt Ceiling
The US President’s speech and the August 2nd deadline to raise the nation’s debt ceiling is another big story resonating online this week on Yahoo!. We saw lots of Americans looking up, “Who is my Congressman” and “Who is my Senator,” and also questions about how many times the debt ceiling has been raised in the past. Speaker of the House John Boehner remains a hot searched topic. A lot of people want to know how to pronounce his name and they are also clarifying the details of his proposed deficit reduction plan as he and the White House continue to wrestle for a solution.
Big Business Changes: Walmart, McDonald’s, & the NFL
Some big business news kept the Web buzzing this week. Word that Walmart will try to take on Netflix and now offer online movie rentals sent searches for “Walmart video” up 1,100% this week on Yahoo!.
McDonald’s revamped Happy Meals also set off big buzz in the search world. And of course, the start of NFL training camp after the owners and players struck a deal, also struck a major chord online.
Cool Drinks to Beat the Heat
Recent high temps are sending more people online to look for cold drinks to cool off. The top searched cocktail this week on Yahoo! is the mojito. And if you’re not 21 yet – how about a tall glass of chocolate milk? It was National Chocolate Milk Day this week and we saw a big jump in searches for the good old Hershey’s version and also renewed interest in egg creams - the combo of syrup, milk and seltzer.
