Yahoo! aggregates the billions of searches performed across Yahoo! properties to give the pulse on what people are thinking and talking about. Searches represent the people, an instant poll every moment of the day, looking into the fleeting moods and entrenched attitudes of Internet users across the world. Each week Yahoo! Web Life Editor Heather Cabot these trends on local and national broadcast. The London riots are rocking the web this week, the stock market’s ups and downs are capturing attention and  the movie The Help is getting lots of buzz.

London Riots
The London riots gripped Yahoo! users this week. Searches for updates on the violence and looting in London and nearby cities have been off the charts this week as police try to restore order and round up suspects.  People are scouring the web for maps of the hardest hit areas and videos and photos of the fires and unrest. They’re also looking for live-streaming coverage of the mayhem that’s unfolded since last Saturday. That’s when a vigil for a man shot by police in London’s Tottenham neighborhood got out of control.   We’ve seen a lot of queries about Tottenham and Mark Duggan, the victim. People want to know more about his background, they want to see his photo and are interested in the role race may be playing in the volatile and dangerous situation.

Stock Market Buzz

The other story making waves across the web this week is the reaction to America’s downgraded credit rating by and grim predictions about the health of the US economy.  As the markets bounced up and down, Yahoo! users wanted to know the difference between a recession and a depression and wondered about the best stocks to buy.  They looked for historical perspective, too – searches for the stock market crash of 1929, black Monday 1987 and a Great Depression timeline soared as the markets took investors on a rollercoaster ride.

There’s lots of anticipation about the new movie “The Help” opening this weekend. The film, based on the book by Kathryn Stockett, is getting more searches than all other current movie openings combined – mostly by women and especially those living in the south where the story is set.
