Yahoo! aggregates the billions of searches performed across Yahoo! properties to give the pulse on what people are thinking and talking about. Searches represent the people, an instant poll every moment of the day, looking into the fleeting moods and entrenched attitudes of Internet users across the world. Each week Yahoo! Web Life Editor Heather Cabot explores these trends on local and national broadcast. As the September 11th, tenth anniversary approaches many are on the web searching for details, patriotic songs and more. Obama’s job speech is causing a flood of online interest and between Chaz Bono’s Dancing With the Stars stint and Fall TV talk, television is top of mind this week for Searchers.
September 11th Tenth Anniversary
The tenth anniversary of 9/11 looms large on the web this week as Americans prepare to remember the victims of that horrific day. Ten years ago, when the news broke, people watched the tragic events unfold on TV. Yet they turned to the web to look for ways to help – to donate blood, to send supplies and to assist the families of first responders. A decade later, we’re seeing lots of searches for lesson plans by teachers and parents to help explain what happened to a new generation who never knew life before ground zero, the TSA and the war in Iraq. A wave a patriotism continues to grow with searches for American flag screen savers and songs like Lee Greenwood’s “God bless the USA.” And interest in conspiracies continues to bubble up especially with this significant anniversary just days away.

Obama Jobs Bill
Obama gave his pitch to create jobs, and the White House is hoping that it's not too late. All eyes are on the president — in the days leading up to the jobs speech, people were looking at "obama white house," "obama speech," "obama congress," "obama approval rating" and of course the tiny handful checking "obama birth certificate" (up 713%).
Who's looking into Obama?
- 40% female, 60% male
- 23% kids under 17
- 17% people in their 20s, and searches go to people all the way in their 50s
- Top States: Texas, Florida, California, Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts
Chaz Bono and Fall TV
The frenzy over Chaz Bono’s anticipated role on “Dancing With The Stars.” This has been a huge topic online this week. The news sent lots of Yahoo! users to look up photos of Chaz before and after his gender reassignment, details on his mom Cher and even baby pictures of the former Chastity Bono.Fans look forward to the announcement on who will compete for next "Dancing with the Stars" even before the finale of the current season. This time, including Chaz Bono in the mix has triggered talk of a boycott — although notably, not much Search activity surrounding that.
Fall TV continues to be top of mind for Searchers on Yahoo!. Check out this great post from Yahoo! TV to learn more about the new shows.
