Where were you in 1995?

The year is 1995. Bill Clinton is president. Jerry Garcia is still singing. Toy Story is leading at the box office. Everyone is reading “Angela’s Ashes.” The O.J. Simpson trial is pre-empting soap operas. “Java” is still a cup of coffee. Kevin Mitnick has just been arrested for hacking. The Dow Jones has closed above 4,000 for the first time. Pamela Anderson wed Tommy Lee in a white bikini. Will Ferrell is about to become a household name. Email is something for computer science geeks. And Yahoo! is no longer a way to blow off a Ph.D. dissertation.

Fourteen years ago today, Jerry and David officially incorporated Yahoo!. And, oh, how the world has changed. Remember when faxes were the fastest, most efficient way communicate in writing? When the newspaper landing on your doormat was your best portal to world news? When calling catalog 800#s was the only way to beat driving to the store? That crazy sound of a modem connecting to the Interwebz?

We’d like to think we had something to do with the revolution. Here’s to lots more of that. Happy 14th Birthday, all you Yahoos.

Got a personal commute assistant?

I do. And so does everyone else in our Northern California offices. Her name is Danielle Bricker. And she is singularly responsible for getting people out of their gas-guzzling cars and into far-more-pleasurable, alternative modes of transportation (WiFi shuttle buses, commuter trains, light rail, bikes, van pools, carpools, etc.).

With the title of “Commute Coordinator,” Danielle is likely a maverick in Corporate America. She’s not only a cheerleader for a greener way of life (literally walking the walk), she’s there to help every Yahoo figure out the most practical way from Point A to Point B. And she has a good answer for just about every excuse you can come up with: “What if my kid gets sick in the middle of the day and I have no car?” Our guaranteed ride home program won’t cost you a dime. “But I’ll get sweaty on my bike!” We’ve got showers. “No one else works my hours.” Let me check my database of carpoolers.

Here’s a report NBC just ran about Danielle and our commute program, inspired by photos she took on a recent commute from San Francisco.

With fossil fuel flirting with $4 a gallon, you need to get yourself a Danielle.

Props to Paul Stamatiou, former Yodel intern, for his great how-to on embedding Flickr slideshows.

Elvis is Everywhere

Elvis in the Desert

bath year 2, day 235 - Elvis is alive and well

Flickr, the world’s leading photo sharing community, has over 14,000 photos tagged with “elvis,” proving once and for all that Mojo Nixon knew what he was singing about:

“Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king”

It’s National Elvis Week and people from around the world are converging on Graceland to pay their respects to the king.

Flickr Spokesdog Dos Pesos has asked me to assure his fans that rumours about him masterminding the mauling of Elvis’ teddy bear have no basis in fact. None.

Photos from shadowplay, longristra and Angelav. See more photos tagged with Elvis in Flickr’s Elvis Clusters.
